“Mad” about books

I needed to pick a theme to tie a selection of recent reads together and realized that each one had a “mad scientist” character as the antagonist. Bwaa–ha-ha!

I just finished Atherton: the House of Power by Patrick Carman which is on the 2008 Lone Star list.  Edgar toils away in the fig groves to feed the privileged ones who live above him and control the water supply. His special gift is climbing which takes him into forbidden territory and leads him to the discovery of the manipulating mind who created his world. Atherton has its greedy dictators but who compares to the evil genius who designed this place to collapse into itself and leave all vulnerable to an ecological monster?? Check this book out at www.unlockdrhardingsbrain.com

Something truly creepy, not to mention gruesome, is happening in Victorian London why else would Albert Wilkes who was buried last week appear at teatime and scare his wife and dog! How can a fifteen-year old pickpocket, a museum clock expert, the curator of the Department of Unclassified Artefacts, and the daughter of a clergyman outwit a millionaire collector specializing in death? Augustus Lorimore can bring the dead back to life and that is not a good thing. Who can escape?…The Death Collector by Justin Richards.

In The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart, four children each chosen because of a unique gift are sent by Mr. Benedict to infiltrate the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened. It is a strange school indeed where the goal is to pass enough quizzes to be chosen a Messenger, maybe even an Executive. However, it is the Whisperer that is important. What is this device, so secret that only the select ever encounter it? How does the madman who created it mean to take over the world?

Tell me about some books that you are “mad” about. What is on your “read this” list?

  1. On my list of books to read I chose horse books because I like horses and there were a couple new horse books that looked pretty interesting. I chose The First Horse I See by Sally M. Keehn and it’s about a young girl who struggles to tame the horse she gets by the deadline. One Unhappy Horse by C.S. Adler and is about a young girl whose horse requires surgery but money is short even if they can get it the surgery might not work. I Am the Great Horse by Katherine Roberts is told from the view of Alexander the Great’s horse. FireHorse by Diane Lee Wilson is about a young girl who must leave her home and struggles agianst all odds to live out her dreams to be a vet. My favorites were The First Horse I See and Fire Horse. The books are very interesting and I enjoyed reading them. Hope everyone else does too.

  2. I am “mad” about almost all books. A book that is on my read this list is called…Howl’s moving Castle.

It’s about a young lady;Sophie. She has two other sisters and she is the oldest. the saying in her land goes that the oldest of three daughters never has a lot of fortune, and the youngest has the most fortune. When her Father died her step-mom took over and sent the other two sisters to become apprentices to different people, and Sophie becomes an apprentice to her step-mom at the hat-shop. The witch of the waste comes and curses her, and turns her into an old crone. She sets out to try and break the curse and ends up at the wizard Howl’s castle. She made a deal with a demon, if she broke his curse she would break his contract with Howl. Will Sophie Break the contract or walk out, staying an old crone?

  3. A book I am “mad” about is a book that has been out for quite a long time. It was made 20 or so years ago. The title of this book is Neuromancer and was written by William Gibson. The book depicts and correctly predicts the many advancements of computer science through a fictional storyline. I heard about this book through another book that was all about false and correct predictions of the future, and it sparked my interest. I want to find a copy of this book so I can finally read it. :D

  4. P.S. I am also “mad” about a couple of books a made a display about in the library. All of them are based around scientific breakthroughs. I displayed one about Cryptids. Cryptids are beasts or creatures that have yet to be proven to exist, like Big Foot. In addition, I displayed a book about global warming. You probably know it’s titled The Inconvient Truth. It was made by Al Gore and discusses the dangers of contributing to Global Warming. I don’t agree with all the views described in the book, but I agree with some of it. I really enjoyed setting up this display.

  6. There is an interesting new book in the library called Trudy. It is about a girl whose parents are older than most middle schoolers’ parents and she has to deal with it and her best friend who left her to join another crowd. She wishes things would be the same, but she makes a new friend and she gets a crush on a boy.

  8. I am mad about the Clique books. They are about friendships and tough situations that the girls have to handle. One in particular is called Sealed With a Diss. These girls named Massie, Kristen, Alicia, Dylan, and Claire have to deal with boy problems. From backstabbing, broken hearts, flirting, fighting over boys, and plain diss, can these girls be friends and have guys in their life, or is everything gonna explode??

  9. I like the books the give suspense and adventure. Margaret Haddix provides just that. Among the Hidden is the best one, and is the starting book for the Shadow Children series. It’s about a boy named Luke who lives in a world were no one is allowed to have more than three children. Luke is a third child, which makes him illegal. If the population police find out about Luke….well I don’t want to give it away, but this is on my must read list.

  11. There is this one book that I’m crazy about. The book is called ”SWINDLE”. This book is about this kid that has a very rare baseball card that cost atleast 1,000,000 dollars and he doesn’t know. And this old man trades him $20 for the card. Then the kid finds out how much the card is really worth. After that the kid tells his friends and they plan to sneak into the guys house and steal the card back. The bad thing is is that they have to go through gard dogs and alarms carefully. ” Read this book and u will find out why I’m mad about this book.”
