Tis the season

It’s that busy time of year, at least for all the grown ups. Time flies by and there is so much to do. Even the kids have activities and projects and places to go. Too much to do sometimes makes people short-tempered or anxious. Suddenly we forget that it is a time of anticipation, wonder, sharing, and smiles.

Even if we haven’t read the story, most of us know about Ebenezer Scrooge from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. We have seen at least a couple of variations on TV reminding us that generosity is it’s own reward. Most of us don’t think of ourselves as “scroogy.” We would never be that mean or selfish. I think that one of the things that impresses me about this story is that the author reminds us that giving is needed at many levels–certainly to the members of our family, like nephew Fred. However, there is Cratchit, the employee (or fellow student or teacher) and also the donation for “the Poor,” those who are less fortunate that we don’t even know. At the story’s end, we are also reminded that Scrooge changes his whole life, not just one day.

Another old favorite story that I have not read in years is The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew by Margaret Sidney. This book was one that belonged to my mother as a child that I read and reread in my own childhood mostly for the chapter on Christmas. Somehow the joy in the simple preparations of this poor family made an impression on me. They had such fun gluing bits of shiny paper to make ornaments and the author made you truly believe that it was not about getting presents. I ought to read it again just to see if any of that magic is still there.

What about you? Are there things that make this time of year special in your homes and families? What traditions do you have that help you celebrate? Can you tell something about book you have read or a story you have heard or even seen on TV that is a positive memory? Do any of them affect the the things that you do or the way you act?

  1. Every christmas we always go to my grandma’s house.Because we do not have enough room in our apartment. But this christmas we are moving into a nice big two story house, and we are moving into it tommorow. It is really fun because our whole family gets together.

  2. Every Christmas at my house the whole family comes home. My sister is at college most of the year and I don’t get to see her. We always put up the Christmas tree and cover it with ornaments. The whole family usually sits down to watch an old Christmas classic. This is important to me because it creates a memory that I can remember for many years.

  3. A tradition in our family is to count the days until Christmas using beads on a ring around a wooden Christmas tree. On the final day, we move a star instead of a bead and it sits on the ring at the top of the tree.

I see many Christmas-related TV specials around this time of year, and I understand the main message they send: Christmas is not a time for receiving; it is a time for giving and spending time with your family and sharing the holiday spirit.

  4. This time of year is special to me because i get to spend time with my family and friends.
Every year on Christmas Morning we make pigs in a blanket. Its been a tradition in my family for many years. I have no books or movies that help me remember good times in my family because most of them ARE good times.
During Christmas i act overly happpy for a reason i do not know. Because of this i have loved every Christmas for as long as i can ever remember. Christmas is a happy timeof year that allows friendships to be pulled together and family bonds made stronger.

  6. The Christmas Carol helps me with the christmas sprit to kind and charitable all year. Every year for Christmas when we open presents, I just reminds me how kind we could be.

  7. I think the movie a Christmas carol is a good example of how it’s better to give than receive and it helps you in the inside and how Christmas is a holiday that you can give to the people who are less fortunate than you. I think this relates to me and my father because at are church we go out to down town Austin and give the homeless food and we share the word with them it’s really a neat thing to do to be apart of. I celebrate Christmas the American traditional way.
