Order in the library?

Some type of order is fundamental to the working of a library. How else can books be located for those who want to use them? Thanks to Melville Dewey many libraries are organized by the Dewey decimal system with an alpha-numeric concept. Keeping books in order is another matter that requires attention on the part of those shelving and cooperation from those who browse the shelves.

What are your thoughts and feelings on organizing the library? Is it really that important? Why or why not? Do you think there is a better way than Dewey? Tell me about it. Is this only about finding books or are there other considerations? Tell me about your frustrations or insights, or your most creative solutions to dealing with books in the library.

  1. Ya I think its very important that the books are in order. If not, we would have to search the whole library for one book! And that would be a lot of work for something that could be so simple.

  2. About the dewey numbers…I think that we should just go by author.Dewey numbers are too complicated and there is a much easier way in my opinion

  3. So far I have only found three books out of place in my section (w-z), I will continue checking daily. I hope I see no more books out of place!

  4. I think that organization in a library is very important. Without it, libraries would just be a messy cacophony of books. It would be extremely hard to locate any books if there was no semblence of order. I don’t think that there is a better way yet than the Dewey system. With it’s numerical order, it is the best system available.

  5. i don’t prefer shelving and organizing the shelves because people always mess it up but it is necessary so all i want is for people to know how frustrating it is so STOP!

  6. Order in the library is very important for finding a book. After shelf reading I found that people have no common sense! I found D’s in W’s and M’s in the Z’s. I know that people get frustrated when they can’t find something in the library, I know I do.

  8. I think organizing the library is very important so people can find things easier. For instance if someone needs a book for a project they can easily find it. I think that the Dewey system is the easiest so far to use but there could be some other possibilities that could be explored at a later time.

  9. I think that organizing the books in the library is important because it makes the books easier to find. It’s also important to seperate fiction and non-fiction books.

  10. I personally think that organization in the library is extremely important. If there was no method of keeping books organized, how would anyone find books? There wouldn’t even be a need for library aides. That is why organization in the library is crucial.
